Reclaim your sense of self, safety, and connection

Trauma

The experience of trauma is extremely personal, unique, and complex. However, what is universal is the distressing experience of losing our sense of safety in the world and in the self. Trauma can encompass an acute and extremely distressing event or can represent chronic, repeated, and prolonged multiple harmful events.

Trauma activates parts of the brain and our body’s defense systems that can result in chronic and severe anxiety, depression, guilt, anger, hyperreactivity and hypervigilance, dissociation, and the inability to experience pleasure. We can become stuck in a fight-flight-or-freeze response that blocks our ability to enjoy our lives, experience a sense of inner peace, and connect with others. Treatment of trauma must, therefore, be individualized and address the physiological, emotional, social, occupational, and psychological effects.
